Brillant was born in 1868, the son of Orange I. In 1877, he moved to Remi Vanderschueren’s stables in Vollezele.
In 1878, Brillant won the first international prize at the World’s Fair in Paris. In the years that followed, he also claimed championship titles in London and Lille (1879), Brussels (1880), Hanover (1881), and Amsterdam and Ghent (1884). This marked the true beginning of the Belgian Draft Horse breed.
Brillant’s success paved the way for the founding of the Royal Society of the Belgian Draft Horse in 1886. For a long time, the stallion Brillant (1868–1893) served as the representative model for the Belgian Draft Horse breed standard.
All of this took place at the ‘Haras de Vollezele’.
You can discover the full story at the museum.
We had a fantastic afternoon with our group. The guide spoke about 'their' draft horses with such passion that the time just flew by. Highly recommended for groups!
