The Belgian draft horse officially recognized as Flemish intangible heritage.

The culture surrounding the Belgian (or Brabant) draft horse was officially recognized as Flemish intangible cultural heritage in 2018. “These sturdy animals impress and continue to bring people together,” says Minister of Culture Sven Gatz.

In early 2018, the culture surrounding the Belgian (or Brabant) draft horse was recognized by the Flemish Government as Flemish intangible cultural heritage. The province of Flemish Brabant celebrated this recognition with a relay event visiting Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Galmaarden, Lennik, and Vilvoorde - municipalities that play a key role in safeguarding the draft horse heritage. In each of the four municipalities, Provincial Executive member Tom Dehaene presented an award - in the form of a stable plaque - to an association that has made a significant contribution to preserving the culture of the Belgian (or Brabant) draft horse. In Vollezele (Galmaarden, Pajottegem), the plaque was presented to ‘Vollezele Leeft’, organizer of the Brabant Draft Horse Day, and affixed to the "Brillant van Vollezele" statue (by Ron Deblaere).
